First look at Ubuntu for Android

Till date we had only heard rumors and seen still images of that project. But today Canonical released a video from the Fórum Internacional Software Livre (FISL) 13 event held in Porto Alegre, Brazil showing a device running Ubuntu and explained many of its features.

Canonical had claimed that the Ubuntu for Android,

“transforms your high-end phone into your productive desktop, whenever you need it.”

While it does look doing exactly that.

    Ubuntu for Android copy

In the video, they have plugged the phone into the dock that led to the launch of Ubuntu system. No emulation was there by any means and it used all the power the phone has to offer. Which means that system features like notifications could be swapped between Ubuntu and Android seamlessly. Now the next thing that Ubuntu is supposed to have is the permission of OEMs like HTC, Samsung, Motorola would have to be interested in this project and give Ubuntu the access to their drivers for their devices.

While many experts are debating over whether Ubuntu for Android will prove to be the future of personal computing and that the desktop computers will become obsolete. We believe that both have their own future, their own use and limitation, it depends on the purpose you use it for. Something becomes “obsolete” when the all its functionality can be performed by newer technology taking resource consumption in mind. Mobile devices may well become more “mainstream” however.

[How To] Send Fake Emails, on behalf of anyone

If yes, then you will be pleased to know there are tons of great online services available for this job. Take EMKEI.CZ for example. This website offers the feature to send emails to any email ID, on behalf of any one (that is, from any email ID)

This is a prime example of email spoofing, taking benefit of the fact that the SMTP servers aren’t providing any mechanism for the authentication of the senders’ email. But you don’t need to know all these jargons, just fill the required details, and you’re ready to go.

The interesting part of this whole trick is, when the receiver gets the email, and replies to it, then that reply goes to the real owner of that email ID. The email passes any filter and doesn’t land in the SPAM folder.

    check

To know that if you stand on the other side of the prank, all you gotta do is, view the source of the email, and look for the IP address of the sender, you can then visit sites like IP2LOCATION which can help you trace the location of the sender, the ISP, domain and other useful information, this can be enough to figure out if the email is genuine or fake.

  • [How To] Boost your Home Wi-Fi with some simple steps

Your old Wi-Fi router might be a little outdated when it comes to the full satisfaction, But there are always ways you can get the best out of your gadgets with a little common practices.

Wi-Fi is one of the most common and important gadgets which is used in Millions of homes, and yet it’s also ne of the most frustrating. If you’re plagued by slow speeds, bad reception, and other Wi-Fi issues, here are 10 ways you can power up the Wi-Fi in your home.

Boost your Signal with a little bit of hacking

You can extend the range of your Wi-Fi router with little bit of hacking into it. Install the DD-WRT firmware which gives you tons of great security features and other enhancements, and gives you the option to boost your transmitting power. Lifehacker has an easy tutorial over this topic, which lets you install the firmware easily.

The hack may be dangerous for your router, but most routers can handle an increase up to 70mW without causing any issue. so, it might not be much of the concern for you, but checking the avg. or max. values for your router would be helpful.

    Control Bandwidth hogging Applications

Most of the times it’s the people in your house who are getting best out of your Router, by playing online games, video chats, torrent files, or uses services like Netflix — which may give you the impact that your Wi-Fi is not functioning properly. It is good to check out for it. Services like these hogs bandwidth and makes internet slower for everyone else.

Luckily, you can use something called Quality of Service (QoS) – to regin in those bandwidth hogs. With QoS, you can proritize certain applications (say Video Chat) over others (like Video games) so the most important application get the bandwidth they deserve. There are plenty of articles (tutorials) on the internet, Google is your friend.

Reboot your Router automatically on a Schedule

If you’re one of the many folks that has to reboot their router every so often so it doesn’t drop out, there is a solution. You can run a few tests to make sure the problem isn’t caused by heat, old firmware, or excess downloading, but an easy way to solve the problem is just automatically reboot it once a day or so. You can do this with DD-WRT or just a regular old outlet timer. When you’re done, you shouldn’t have to reboot your router so often (which is great if your router’s all the way up in the attic).

    Find the Right Wireless Channel

If you have neighbors, their routers may be interfering with yours and causing the signal to degrade. Wireless routers can operate on a number of different channels, and you want yours on a channel with as little interference as possible. Use a tool like Wi-Fi Stumbler or Wi-Fi Analyzer to find the perfect channel in your house.

Find the Perfect Spot for Your Router

Routers may be ugly, but that doesn’t mean you should hide them behind the TV cabinet. If you want the best signal, you’ll need it out in the open, free of any walls and obstructions. Point the antennas vertically, and elevate the router if you can (one reader found that his attic was the perfect spot). Lastly, make sure its in the center of your house, so you have the best coverage possible throughout your home.

    Use the Latest Wi-Fi Technologies

One of the best ways to make sure your network is as fast and reliable as possible is to use up-to-date hardware. We’ve gone through the basics of router hardware before, so check out the first lesson of our networking Night School for the full lowdown. The main thing you need to know: Wireless A, B, and G are old and slow, and wireless N will give you the fastest speeds around. Note that you’ll need both a wireless N router and a wireless N card in your computer if you want the full speed boost.

    Replace your router’s antenna

The antennas supplied with your router are designed to be omnidirectional, meaning that they broadcast in all directions around the router. If your router is near an outside wall, half of the wireless signals will be sent outside your home, and much of your router’s power will be wasted. Most routers don’t allow you to increase the power output, but you can make better use of the power. If your router’s antenna is removable, you can upgrade to a high-gain antenna that focuses the wireless signals in only one direction. You can even aim the signal in the direction you need it most. Consider a Linksys high-gain antenna—they’re powerful and easy to install. Or shop for other high-gain antennas.

    Add a wireless repeater

Wireless repeaters extend your wireless network range without requiring you to add any wiring. Just place the wireless repeater halfway between your wireless router, modem router, or access point and your computer, and you can get an instant boost to your wireless signal strength. Check out the wireless-N repeaters from Linksys, Hawking Hi-Gain, ViewSonic, D-Link, and Buffalo Technology.

    Reduce wireless interference

The most common wireless technology, 802.11g (wireless-G), operates at a frequency of 2.4 gigahertz (GHz). Many cordless phones, microwave ovens, baby monitors, garage door openers, and other wireless electronics also use this frequency. If you use these wireless devices in your home, your computer might not be able to “hear” your router over the noise coming from them.

If your network uses wireless-G, you can quiet the noise by avoiding wireless electronics that use the 2.4 GHz frequency. Instead, look for cordless phones and other devices that use the 5.8 GHz or 900 megahertz (MHz) frequencies. Because 802.11n (wireless-N) operates at both 2.4 GHz and the less frequently used 5.0 GHz frequency, you may experience less interference on your network if you use this technology.

[How To] Enable/Disable Auto-hide Unity launcher in Ubuntu 12.04

If you are reading this article, chances are good that you have Ubuntu 12.04 installed on your system. If you don’t we would suggest you do it immediately as per your convenience. Ubuntu 12.04 is an LTS version and it should be good shot if you want to upgrade from any other older version you are using.

New Ubuntu 12.04 has lots of exciting features and improvements introduced from its predecessor. If you are using the new version, you must have noticed that Ubuntu doesn’t hide its unity launcher automatically – like it used to do in the previous version. It is not a bug. It’s just the canonical team which decided not to enable the feature by default.

You can sure enable the feature once again, if it is not so convenient enough or if you are more comfortable with auto-hide feature.  Here are the simple steps you need to follow:

    Instructions

    unity laucher behaviour settings

    1. Click on “Dash Home” and search for “Appearance,” and click on it.

    2. In the New window which appears, switch to the “behaviour” tab.

    3. Now Click on “on/off” button to Toggle Auto-hide launcher.

    Tips

You can also find other settings related to the unity laucher in the same tab, which includes — “reveal location” and “reveal sensitivity.” While “Reveal location” helps you setup the position of the screen where hovering your mouse will reveal the unity launcher to the forground from the hidden postition – the “Reveal Sensitivity” defines the hover time period at which the laucher should be activated (should be visible to the forground) upon hovering the mouse cursor.

  • [How To] find temporary cache folder of Internet download manager (idm) for incomplete download files

[How To] find temporary cache folder of Internet download manager (idm) for incomplete download files

It is sure a very helpful software and makes our work easier and comfortably simple. Sometimes you might have been wondering, where IDM is storing all your files before presenting the final output you get after the finished download. Well, it is simple – Your files are unfinished and it should be in the temporary folder. Once you Know where to look, You are almost there.

IDM saves your cache files of incomplete downloads at this location:

    C:\Users\digitfreak\AppData\Roaming\IDM\DwnlData

Replace digitfreak with your computer username.

You will find folders which are indexed by the names of your current unfinished downloads. This is what we were looking for. One thing that we notice is that these files have no extension.

If you are downloading multiple files at once, like a music album, you’ll find that there are exactly the same number of files without extensions. To get the preview of the files, you can copy one of them to other location and add an extension at the end.

Play or open the file with the software which can run it.

    Warning

*Never rename the folder or file you are download in the temp folder of IDM or you might end up with the non-resumable download.

  • E-book libraries are gaining popularity very slowly

E-book libraries are gaining popularity very slowly

The latest trend that has taken its turn in the field of digitized education is the starting of new learning methods including the education through eBooks. The latest thing implemented is the borrowing or lending of eBooks from the e-library. But according to a new study it has been said that E-book reading has been quite slow these days as it has proved to be really slow than the manual method of borrowing and reading books from the libraries.

When asked in detail few of the problems came out in light. Users complain that the limited supply or say choices available in the case of books has been a real pain in the ass, resulting in the frustration of their kind. Another reported trouble is the uncertainty in knowing whether their local branch offers E-releases or not.

This new survey was released by the Pew research center centered mostly on the Present status of E-book lending/ Borrowing. The report says that around 12% of E-book users of the teenage group or older downloaded a text from the library over the past year, whereas around 20% of the adults read an E-book recently.

    2

Major book companies and publishers have made this very clear in their statements that they are gonna make the books available in the form of e-books in a very limited way and some have even refused to do so. The companies feel like they are gonna loose the profit and value merchandise if they start letting other people read their books online. Some big names are Simon and schuster, the hachette book group etc and when you honestly ask me about it i feel its more because of the lack of proper awareness.

The survey conducted was actually done on about 3000 respondents in the period of almost a month , suggesting the fact that there patrons who are in charge of the libraries are also not comfortable with the E-book processing as they are unable to provide the users what they need. Same thing goes with the users as they complain that they can’t get a particular title on their devices just because the device is unable to receive any digital text from outside.

The users replied or better yet advised that they would surely be more interested in this project if they would be provided with a device with the E-book they are looking for already downloaded in it. This seems to be a better alternative for them rather than sharing just the digital content! Now this changes everything as this whole program is now turned into a E-book device lending thing. Over half of the Patrons say that most of the time it turns out that that the book they were looking for was not with them from the very start.

The American library association has been arranging meetings with publishers quite frequently nowadays since they also understand the gravity of this situation and they are looking for ways to satisfy both the sides. Recently the Penguin group (USA) announced a different pilot program or better say that as an oncoming experiment just to support this new initiative. The group has declared that they will make every book they publish available as E-books in the coming six months after the book is published. This program is going to be active only for the New York and Brooklyn library systems. But who knows if this one is going to be stable or not because they also declared some kind of a program last year also but it was later suspended, and we hope that it doesn’t happens this time around also.

“I applaud Penguin’s decision today to re-start e-book sales to libraries so that we may again meet our mutual goals of connecting authors and readers,” library association president Molly Raphael said in a statement.

On the bright side a new statistic that was lost in all the negativity found in this survey was this little fact that seems to strengthen our faith in this new digitization of library thing. The data is :- Those who borrow E-books from libraries tend to read 29 more books per year than their average usage data showed. This is still greater than those who don’t read e-books by 23 books. And the experts thing that this is good even for the book groups because ultimately the users who don’t have a library card are gonna get more comfortable buying an e-book rather than first getting a library card and then borrowing the book.

Take a look at the bigger picture here if you have trouble understanding the usefulness of this new initiative. Around half of those who were surveyed said that they bought their most recent books and only 15 percent said that they borrowed an E-book from a library!

So what do you choose? Thick and heavy books, long lines of borrowers or just a digital copy of your book on your pda or laptop or your smartphone!
